COURSE STRUCTURE
The PHTA course has been designed for maximum flexibility. Training for the first year is on different weekends from the second year, allowing students in the second year to “catch up” on classes they may have missed in the first year. Training is held on one Saturday a month, allowing students a full month to focus on each topic.
Our curriculum offers a balance of academic and practical “hands on” training with plenty of opportunity to practise techniques, participate in practical exercises and engage in lively discussion. In addition to learning the necessary therapeutic skills, and developing their self - awareness, students are also taught the practical skills required to set up and run a successful practice.
Timetable
Workshops take place at Regents College, London NW1 from 9.30am for a full day. Regents College is located on the Inner Circle, Regents Park. Nearest tube stations: Baker Street & Regent’s Park.
(a) For FIRST YEAR students: first Saturday of each month plus three additional Saturdays.
(b) For SECOND YEAR students: second Saturday of each month plus three additional Saturdays.
The course consists of:
• 30 full days of training and hands-on experience, including practice sessions and peer support.
• 6-8 hours home study per week to include preparation of homework and a Journal.
• Supervision periods in the second year.
• Guidance and support during the course and following completion of training.
• Access to the dedicated PHTA internet forum.
Assessment
Students on the course are assessed throughout the training and can ask for reports on their progress. A review is held with each student on completion of their first year of training.
Assessment is based on attendance at workshops (1/2 unit point) and the completion of Coursework and Journal to an acceptable standard (1/2 unit point). All 30 units must be completed before the diploma is awarded. Those students who provide evidence of appropriate prior knowledge, training and experience may be allowed credits for certain units, and gain exemption from attendance at those units.
A Diploma in Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy is awarded on successful completion of the course. Students are entitled to use the letters Dip PHTA. The PHTA Diploma entitles students to apply for membership of the National Council of Psychotherapists, the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (including the General Hypnotherapy Register) and the National Council for Hypnotherapy.
A Certificate of Attendance is given to:
(a) those who have completed the training course but do not intend to practise as psychotherapists and hypnotherapists, or
(b) those who, in the opinion of the course tutors, have not fulfilled the requirements to practise.
Note: Where, on the advice of the Course Tutors, the Academy considers it is not to the student's advantage to continue, it reserves the right to withhold tuition and the student will be asked to withdraw from the course.
Application and admission
Applicants seeking to enrol are required to demonstrate interest, enthusiasm and the ability to commit to two years of training, and show aptitude and potential for study both in workshops and at home. Although no upper age limit exists, candidates must be over the age of 21.
On receipt of an application, a free morning in class and an interview is arranged. Acceptance is on the basis of the interview and upon receipt of a satisfactory reference.
Not only do we encourage applications from those who intend to establish their own practice (or may already be in practise), we also welcome applications from those interested in psychotherapy and hypnosis purely to learn more about themselves and others.
Ongoing entry
The PHTA course is designed to meet individual learning needs with an ongoing entry possible at different stages of the year (please see Rolling Entry).
